Determining the value of your things and making practical decisions

As we move through different stages of life, we begin to realise that value isn’t always about money. Some things might not be worth much on the market, but they’re full of memories. Others may look impressive on paper - expensive, antique, or rare - but no longer spark joy or carry meaning for us personally.
If you’re getting ready to downsize, one of the biggest decisions you’ll face is what to keep, what to sell, and what to re-home. It can help to think in two ways: monetary value and sentimental value.
1. Monetary Value
This is the simple stuff - what would someone else pay for this item? Factors like condition, brand, and demand all come into play. You can often get a rough idea by researching online, using google or asking a second-hand dealer.
That said, it’s good to keep expectations realistic.
That beautiful cabinet you bought years ago might only sell for a fraction of what you paid. It’s not about quality - it’s just how the market works right now.
And if selling feels too hard? Donating or giving something to someone who truly needs or appreciates it can be incredibly rewarding. Sometimes that’s the better kind of value.
2. Sentimental Value
Then there’s the deeply personal stuff. Maybe it’s a recipe card in your mother’s handwriting, a worn jumper that smells like home, or a small ornament from a memorable trip. These things may not be useful to others - but they matter to you.
To decide what to keep, ask:
What does this represent?
Is it the item I’m attached to, or the memory?
Would a photo or story help me preserve the feeling?
Tips for Letting Go:
Digitise memories: Scan photos, letters, or artwork.
Keep one of many: A single teacup, not the
full set.
Create a ‘legacy box’: Store a few deeply personal keepsakes in one place.
Share the story: Tell someone before letting go.
Pass it on with purpose: Donate or gift items to those who’ll value them.
You don’t need to keep everything to keep what matters.
The true value of your life isn’t in the objects - it’s in the love, memories, and meaning you carry forward.
